Event: Achieving Adrian: A Nautical Quest for My Truest Self
Date: Saturday, February 28th at 1pm PST
SYNOPSIS:
Achieving Adrian is a theatrical voyage through one woman’s life, told aboard the metaphorical “SS Achievement.” Guided by Cruise Director Adrian -and interrupted by versions of herself like Dark Adrian and Little Adrian – the play blends humor, music, and dance with candid storytelling.
From overachieving in Alabama to chasing dreams in Hollywood, Adrian navigates triumphs as an actress and singer alongside heartbreak, including an abusive marriage that forces her to start over. Back home, she rebuilds through teaching, playwriting, and finding new love.
With tap shoes, songs, and sharp self-reflection, Achieving Adrian explores ambition, survival, and resilience. It asks: what does it really mean to achieve, and how do we steer forward when the ship crashes?
ADRIAN’S BIO:
Adrian Lee Bush is a playwright, director, and performer currently pursuing her MFA in Playwriting at Hollins University’s Playwrights Lab. She has written over 25 plays, including 7 commissioned works that have been fully staged in Alabama. Her play Dear Mama: Letters and Music from World War II marked the grand reopening of the historic Mount Vernon Theater in Tallassee, AL.
Other notable plays include The Magic of Christmas, a WWI-era musical with Hallmark vibes; Alabama Gold, a larger-than-life tale about the 1800s Tallapoosa gold rush; Home Town Canteen and Christmas at the Canteen, two popular wartime revues; and Love Over Fear, a powerful multicultural TYA piece combining spoken word, dance, and shadow puppetry. Her work often blends regional storytelling, music, and social justice themes.
Adrian performs in both professional and community theatre and is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA. She holds a diploma in Intimacy Choreography from Theatrical Intimacy Education and has served as an intimacy director on several productions, including ASF’s Frozen.
She earned her BFA in Theatre Studies from Niagara University and continues to play music with her parents in their “bluegrass gospel” band, Bama Skiffle.
