CALL MY SON / MY CHRISTMAS MOM — SYNOPSIS

This 55-minute show combines live storytelling with a one-act play, followed by a 15-minute audience talkback.

My Christmas Mom is a 30-minute solo storytelling piece written and performed by Michael-David Ker. It chronicles his life with his mother, Joan Carol, the kindest person he ever knew. Joan’s middle name was “Carol” because she was born on Christmas, and she truly embodied the Christmas spirit of giving, warmth, and kindness. In her later years, Joan Carol lived with Alzheimer’s/dementia, but this story is a remembrance of the full, beautiful life she lived before her diagnosis. It is a love letter to her, and to the families and caregivers walking the Alzheimer’s journey.

Call My Son is a one-act play inspired by true events from Michael-David’s life with his mother. The dark comedy stars Michael-David Ker and Isobel Roth as Joan Carol, exploring the heartbreak, humor, confusion, and deep love that can come with caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s/dementia who forgets who you are.

Presented by Shine A Light Theater, the show harnesses the power of theater to shine a light on Alzheimer’s caregiving and the families living through it. Produced by Soaring Solo Studios, many of the stories in this piece were developed with Jessica Lynn Johnson.

Audiences have described the show as a “laugh/cry” experience — heartwarming, heartbreaking, humorous, and hopeful all at once.

This is a meaningful show for Alzheimer’s families, caregivers, and anyone who has loved someone through memory loss.

At its heart, Call My Son / My Christmas Mom reminds us that a person living with Alzheimer’s/dementia is so much more than their diagnosis.

Important note, there is a lot of joy in this show. It’s not depressing!
